Chrysalis The Dark Queen by Ziom05 Chrysalis The Dark Queen by Ziom05
Yep. 2 days of painting = Chrysalis... The Dark Queen

I just had to paint it! :D

Art Print - - [link]

I really would like to thank you for all comments and critiques :)

The baby in egg is... alicorn. And maybe... male alicorn? What do you think now?

First off, this is a really gorgeous piece, and we're using it as an analysis piece over at /r/MLPDrawingSchool (also mlpdrawingschool here on dA). It's particularly excellent to look at to show composition. Nice work!

That said, you asked for critique, so let me see. I'll do a mix of the good and the bad; most of the flaws are simply minor things that only really bugged me on second viewing:

The Good:

- Excellent balance, both up and down and left to right. The focus is properly on Chrysalis first and foremost, but flows out along the swarm and loops back around through the egg... sac... thingy and back up to the queen, floating around the empty view of the horizon.

- The ground has a phenomenal sense of texture, as does Chrysalis herself. The contrast between sections with high texture and those without is very well done.

- The color is nicely unified across the piece as a whole, for the most part (see next section).

- Variety! All over the place, making the piece very interesting to look at. Lots of "cookies" for the viewer.

The Less Than Perfect:

- Chrysalis's horn contrasts with the rest of her; it lacks the texture and specularity of the rest of her hide. It adds to the composition by drawing attention to it, but this could have been achieved without seem not-a-part of Chrysalis.

- Chrysalis's wings, particular in terms of their saturated turquoise color, unbalance the piece somewhat, trapping the eye just a bit too much. Keeping the eye on Chrysalis does serve the overall composition, but I might consider pushing them back just a touch, particularly the far wing.

- Minor minor note: There's a scribbly patch just behind her tail that stands out.

- In pushing back the wings a touch, you might pull her hair out just a bit more, to unify the two.

Super awesome work! Definitely following you for inspiration on future pieces.

Dude. You're awesome.

I love everything about this. I love the coloring; it makes the Changelings seem like some sort of pestilence sweeping across Equestria, leaving barren wasteland wherever they travel. The scene is phenomenal; thousands of Changelings swarming across the barren landscape with Queen Chrysalis leading them, draining the the last of love from some poor soul that has been encased in amber.

This seems like the more natural form that the Changelings should have taken; they seem like a mix between dead, twisted ash trees, moss and insects; much more scary and appropriate than than black ponies filled with holes. I get that it's a kids show, but really. They looked like they were made of black cheese.

I've loved all your pony art, from the shot of Discord, Celestia and Luna to the one of the adventures of Trixie. But this is by far my favorite.

This is incredibly well done. I'm in the process of making a Chrysalis song, and was wondering if you'd be fine with me using this for the Youtube Video? Credit will naturally be given to you

Hi! Not sure if it isn't too late, but it would not be a problem. Go ahead. :)

Also I like how you draw the changelings, especially Chrysalis, really showing there insectoidal nature and that they really HAVE a proper exoskeleton.
